Madhubani, meaning “forest of honey,” is an ancient art from Bihar’s Mithila region, traditionally painted on mud walls during weddings and rituals. Known for its detailed borders, fine lines, and bold colours, it depicts gods, nature, and folk stories in symmetrical patterns. Artists use natural pigments and tools like twigs or fingers to create striking, symbolic designs. Today, Madhubani painting flourishes globally on paper, cloth, and canvas, while staying true to its cultural roots.

The Jha family from Madhubani District, Bihar, has been practicing Madhubani painting since 1967, carrying forward a rich hereditary tradition nurtured across generations. Golu Kumar Jha, who learned under the guidance of his uncle Manish Jha and other senior family members, continues this legacy with 20+ years of experience, while the family collectively holds over five decades of artistic heritage. Their works are celebrated for fine detailing, vibrant natural pigments, mythological storytelling, Ram–Sita narratives, intricate floral borders, and symbolic motifs rooted in folklore.

Over the years, they have earned a state-level award, conducted 5–7 workshops to train students and enthusiasts, and participated in 15–20 regional and state-level exhibitions. For the family, Madhubani painting is not merely a craft but a living heritage—a way to honor their ancestors’ creative spirit while blending devotion, storytelling, and cultural pride in every brushstroke.
