About the Artform

Tholu Bommalata and Miniature Painting

Tholu Bommalata: It is a tradition of shadow puppetry that dates back to 12th century Andhra Pradesh. In the state's native language of Telugu, 'Tholu' is hide or leather and 'Bommalata' is dance of the dolls. The puppets are used to narrate stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. These puppets were translucent and the light used to shine through them during the puppet show.

Miniature Painting: Originated in India in 750 AD. Since then, it has been used to narrate Buddhist teachings, showcase the Mughal empire and illustrate scenes from epics like the Mahabharata and the life of Lord Krishna. The artform is distinctly set apart from other traditional Indian artforms with its delicate brushwork, microscopic details and a comparatively subtle color palette.
