Madhubani, meaning β€œforest of honey,” is an ancient art from Bihar’s Mithila region, traditionally painted on mud walls during weddings and rituals. Known for its detailed borders, fine lines, and bold colours, it depicts gods, nature, and folk stories in symmetrical patterns. Artists use natural pigments and tools like twigs or fingers to create striking, symbolic designs. Today, Madhubani painting flourishes globally on paper, cloth, and canvas, while staying true to its cultural roots.

Preeti Das, a Bhopal-based artist of Bihar origin, carries forward the hereditary tradition of Madhubani painting with a fresh, contemporary lens. Trained in the craft within her family, she deepened her skills through active participation in local art communities, design mentorship under Project Tarasha, and digital training. Holding a Master’s degree in Archaeology, she draws inspiration from history and heritage to inform her art.

With 8–10 years of professional practice, Preeti blends the precision of strong drawing skills with an explorative approach, creating works that bridge tradition and modernity. Her distinctive limited-palette Madhubani series, inspired by a visit to Sanchi, reflects her ability to weave new narratives into an age-old form. Her themes often centre on modern women, women’s stories, and stone art influences, adding depth and relevance to her work. She has participated in 8–10 major exhibitions including Bharat Bhavan and Swaraj Bhavan, shown in Delhi and Mumbai, conducted around 10 workshops, and taken part in nearly 25 gallery shows. Associated with Baro Art and Bhopal’s local samsthas, her work is celebrated for its unique contemporary direction while staying rooted in cultural heritage. For Preeti, Madhubani is both a vessel of tradition and a space for innovationβ€”an artform through which she seeks to tell new stories while honouring the wisdom of the past.
