A tribal art form from the heart of Madhya Pradesh, Gond art is rooted in the spiritual world of the Gond tribe. The word 'Gond' comes from ‘Kond’, meaning green hill. Traditionally painted on mud walls using natural dyes, the art reflects a deep reverence for nature, mythology, and everyday life. Its distinctive style features intricate lines, dots, and dashes that animate flora, fauna, and folklore. Today, this centuries-old tradition thrives on paper and canvas, blending indigenous storytelling with contemporary expression.

Sandeep Dhurve, a Gond artist from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, belongs to a family deeply rooted in the Gond tribal tradition. He learned the artform from his father, a respected teacher who has trained many in their community. While Sandeep initially believed his work would closely resemble his father’s, over time he cultivated his own creative voice—experimenting with distinct textures and vibrant colour combinations while preserving the traditional motifs and storytelling essence of Gond art. With over 10 years of experience, he carries forward a generational legacy that honours the past while embracing innovation.

A B.Sc. graduate with a year of formal design training, Sandeep blends academic learning with the intuitive skill passed down through his lineage. His work stands out for its rhythmic patterns, lively palettes, and tactile qualities that add depth to each composition. For him, tradition is the root from which Gond art grows, but it is creativity in texture and colour that allows it to branch into the future—ensuring that the artform remains both culturally authentic and visually engaging for contemporary audiences.
